HeroRats trained to sniff out landmines

African HeroRats were trained to detect landmines using their sense of smell and as a reward, are reinforced with bananas, avocados, and apples. They are small enough not to trigger the landmines and are large enough to be seen when on the job. Not all rats make the cut. Only after months of training and a final test are they considered HeroRats. You can even adopt one here!

Contrary to public opinion, rats can actually save lives — Apopo’s rats have actually saved thousands.
